Brief Synopsis

One of a series of films, including two shorts, produced by William Berke starring David Sharpe, following Sharpe's work for Hal Roach in shorts and before Sharpe became a mostly-full time stunt man. In this one, Sharpe sings, tap dances, does acrobats, fights, climbs up and down building walls and drives and rides all vehicles that come his way. The first half is a series of collegiate escapades as Ed Bentley (David Sharpe) is finally expelled from dear old Wellmore by Dean Carter (Monte Blue), and he and his valet, Shadow (Fred Toones billed as "Snowflake") are on the way to a bank to get money to go home on, when Ed mistakes two bodyguards (Roger Williams and Ted Adams) pushing their charge, heiress June Merton (Gertrude Messinger, then married to David Sharpe), into a car as being kidnappers. He and Shadow follow them to the Merton apartment and begin to try and "rescue" her from the kidnappers who aren't kidnappers, although with Roger Williams and Ted Adams in the roles, the impression is that it hasn't occurred to them and one keeps expecting them to revert to type. But across the hall, Louie (Matty Fain) and Sonia (Sheila Terry), the low-rent tenants living on the same floor with the "rich" Mertons, have every intention of kidnapping the girl, and do so with the aid of the bumbling Ed and Shadow. Berke was also producing a western series with Harry Carey at the time, and the only cast members from those westerns missing here are Chief Thunder Cloud, Harry Carey and his horse Sonny. Lots of outdoor action and chases with views of 1935 Hollywood.

Synopsis

Young Ed Bentley, Jr., is warned by Dean Carter that his pranks at Westmoor College may cause his expulsion. To forget the humiliating dressing-down he has received, Ed and his friends go to a nearby restaurant. Jackson, a bully from Westmoor's rival, State College, punches Ed's pal to provoke Ed into a brawl he had hoped to avoid. As police arrive, Ed escapes by stealing a roadster, and speeds back to his college room. As he climbs in through the window, Ed comes face to face with Dean Carter, who expels him. Ed and his nervous valet, Shadow, escape out the window as the police hammer on his door. After going through the bushes to the college gate, Ed and Shadow steal a policeman's motorcycle, but they are caught after a brief chase. From jail, the family attorney, Johnson, telephones Ed Bentley, Sr., and arranges for the release of his son and Shadow. As Ed heads home, he sees an heiress, June Merton, who has been apparently abducted; Ed had read about the threats against her in the morning newspaper. Ed and Shadow pursue June to the Adion Hotel, but do not see that she is in the care of bodyguards hired by her father to protect her from shady characters. Although grateful for the protection, June is frustrated that the guards prevent her from having fun. In rooms across the hall, meanwhile, Sonia and Louie, the Mertons' former maid and chauffeur, plan a robbery of Mr. Merton's valuable gems. Ed, believing June is a prisoner, enters the Mertons' room disguised as a telephone repairman. When Mr. Merton enters, June helps Ed to escape through the window and onto the ledge outside, where he nearly falls many floors to the street. After her father leaves, Sonia and Louie enter and steal the gems, chloroforming June. Ed re-enters the hotel through another window, sets a fire in a pot as a diversion, and takes the unconscious June down the fire escape. Louie grabs Shadow and bribes him to hand the box of gems to a confederate downstairs. Ed, Shadow and June, now only feigning unconscious, head for his father's lodge. The criminals follow them, cutting the telephone wire as Ed calls his father, who is in the process of purchasing the gems from Mr. Merton. After Sonia and Louie interrogate Ed, Shadow and June, there is a fight, and the parcel containing the gems is retrieved. At this point, the police arrive, arresting the criminals, and the parents of the two young people enter. Ed realizes his error and apologizes, but June will reward him anyway.
