Synopsis
Soon after running away from Paris with Jean D'Arcy and abandoning her daughter Viola, Belle Ducet tires of Jean and marries James Gates. After twelve years, however, she breaks up with him and goes on to someone else. Meanwhile, James obtains a divorce and then marries Viola, without knowing that she is Belle's daughter. A few months later, Belle has James imprisoned for missing an alimony payment. Viola goes to her to plead for James's release, and Belle instantly recognizes her as the daughter she had left in Paris. When Viola learns of the relationship, and learns, too, that Belle had been married to James, she gets ready to leave him after Belle drops her charges. Finally, however, a remorseful Belle, realizing how much Viola and James love each other, goes to them and denies that she is Viola's mother. Having thus saved her daughter's marriage, Belle commits suicide.

Notes
In its cast listing, Wid's names Walter Law instead of Arthur Law. After this film was released, playwright A. E. Thomas, whose play, also entitled Her Husband's Wife, was produced in 1910 on Broadway, applied for an injunction to deny the use of the title for the film. Although the defendants contended that the use of the same title was coincidental, the injunction was granted.
