Synopsis

Leaving his wife and daughter, a husband sets sail for Australia when he learns that he has inherited a fortune but must go there to claim it. En route he is shipwrecked, and word gets back to his wife that she is now a widow. As a result, she marries a lawyer who has more designs on the fortune than on her, but four years later, after having been saved by a whaling vessel, the first husband returns. When he finds out that his wife is happily remarried, he decides to leave without revealing his identity, until he uncovers a plot, masterminded by the lawyer, to kidnap his daughter. Pursuing the kidnappers, he rescues the little girl, reveals his identity and exposes the lawyer, after which the girl's mother, impressed by the heroism of her first and only legal husband, decides to return to him.

Notes

The story of the film is taken loosely from Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poem, Enoch Arden, published in 1864. Moving Picture World January 15, 1916 and release charts list the film as a two-reeler, but all other sources, including the copyright catalog, list it at four or five reels.
