Synopsis

Bob and Jane Reynolds live happily in a little Staten Island cottage on the twenty-five-dollars-a-week he makes as a chemist testing cement, until Jane decides she wants fancy clothes and spends their butcher money on a fine-feathered hat from a Fifth Avenue milliner. After Bob turns down a bribe from his college friend John Brand, in charge of constructing the Pecos dam, to allow inferior cement to pass inspection, Brand persuades Jane to influence Bob, who finally acquiesces. From the large sum received, Bob invests in the stock market according to a tip of Brand's and makes a lot more money, which enables Jane and him to live luxuriously until the market suddenly shifts and they lose everything. That same day the dam bursts and the subsequent flooding of a valley results in the loss of many lives. After Bob is wounded fighting Brand, Brand's suicide enables Bob and Jane to start life anew, resolved to living without luxuries.
