Synopsis

American heiress Kate Shipley attends the wedding of her French cousin Julie Fonblanque. Julie is marrying the abusive Comte Florian de Crebillon, as arranged by her parents, despite her love for Henri de St. Hillaire. Kate is wooed by English captain John Gregory. When a woman's corpse is discovered in the wishing well of his estate, de Crebillon has it removed immediately. After Julie confides in Kate her plan to elope with Henri, Kate visits to try to dissuade them. When de Crebillon and Gregory arrive unexpectedly, Kate hides Julie and is insulted by de Crebillon due to her unchaperoned state. Gregory and de Crebillon duel. Believing his wound to be mortal, de Crebillon confesses that the body in the well was that of his wife Sylvia, who committed suicide in a drugged stupor that he induced. The wound is actually superficial, and de Crebillon is arrested. Julie can now marry Henri, and Kate marries Gregory.
