Based on the Germanic myth "Das Nibelungenlied" and the Nordic "Volsunga Saga" which inspired J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and composer Richard Wagner's four-opera cycle.

The picture was partially financed by the German-based Media fund VIP. Wolfgang Petersen was previously attached to direct and produce through his Radiant Pictures.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release "Dark Kingdom" on DVD in the USA following its airing on the Sci Fi Channel.

Aired in USA on Sci Fi Channel March 27, 2006 and March 28, 2006 under the title "Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King."

Originally aired in Germany on Sat 1 Network November 29, 2004.

Tandem Communications holds international distribution rights. Sat.1 in Germany and Channel 4 in the UK acquired tv rights for their respective territories. Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment picked up worldwide video and DVD rights except for Japan.
