Synopsis
A look at the life of the famous painter Rembrandt, from the ages of 28 to 63. Moving to Amsterdam as a young man, Rembrandt quickly makes a name for himself as a painter of portraits and as a teacher. After marrying his first wife, Saskia, the couple move into a large home, but are increasingly beset by health ailments and miscarriage. Saskia dies giving birth, and Rembrandt's fortunes seem to plummet. Losing popularity and betrayed by his friends, Rembrandt is forced to auction his paintings, which sell for a fraction of their worth. Through all of his trials, Rembrandt attempts to maintain a sense of dignity and continues to work as a gifted painter.
