Synopsis
The story of popular Leftist band Ton Steine Scherben, Germany's most influential rock group to date. Ton Steine Scherben's songs of love and anger provided the soundtrack for the political protests of students, squatters and the environmentalist movement of the 70s and 80s; they pre-empted punk with their 1970 song "Macht kaputt was euch kaputt macht/ Break the Things That Break You" and, in the same year, founded their own record label but were later to seek refuge from their agit prop music box image by withdrawing to a rural commune. In this film, we see recent and historical footage of concerts and interviews with band members. The musicians discuss such things as contradictions, standards, who or what is to be perceived as the 'enemy', their ideals and, of course, their music. By dovetailing the statements of band members from three decades of music, the film makes a bid to examine just where the cultural Left stand in the year 2001.
