Synopsis

A district attorney falls in love with a star witness, a woman who was once involved in an abusive relationship with a defendant. He has driven three women to attempt suicide, and the last one has succeeded. Hedda, his first lover, had a promising swimming career destroyed by her desperate reaction to his abuse, yet she refuses to accuse the man. What is the nature of a love that can encompass such treatment, the film asks, and how is such a love to be judged in comparison to the deeper bonds of family.
