Synopsis

True story of the war crimes tribunal of Japanese World War II military leader Hideki Tojo. Seen through the eyes of an "ordinary" Japanese couple, the film follows closely the courtroom clashes of American prosecutor Keenan and Australian judge Webb. Controversial in its interpretation of the Pacific war, it suggests that the trial was unfair, and that Tojo was a peaceful man, reluctantly drawn into war when he had no other option. Rejecting comparisons with the Nazis, the film suggests through the character of the Indian judge that Japan invaded much of Southeast Asia in order to free the people from colonialism.
