Synopsis

Michèle, a successful careerwoman tormented by the fickleness of her lover, Philippe, takes an overdose of drugs. After being befriended and nursed by Ann, a young American woman living in Paris, she recovers and begins meeting Philippe again. Ann is attracted to Philippe, and Michèle encourages the affair as a means of revenge on her friend Gladys, who is also involved with Philippe. Ann discovers that, in reality, he is a shy, tormented person bent on saving the family business by winning an important automobile race. As the affair deepens, Michèle is soon overcome by jealousy, and her friendship with Ann is strained. Then, Philippe's car breaks down on a trial run, and he relieves his feelings by cruelly spurning Ann and returning to Michèle for comfort. Begging her friend's forgiveness, Ann leaves Paris with her American boy friend. In the train, her thoughts turn back in despair to this period of love and disappointment.
