Synopsis

Valmont and Juliette de Merteuil are the most talked-about married couple in Paris society. Handsome, elegant, rich, and jaded, they aid and abet each other's extramarital affairs. Valmont is a compulsive seducer; his wife a cruel, intelligent woman who intrigues to have him named a representative to the United Nations. When her latest lover prematurely discards her to marry a student, Cécile, the vindictive Juliette encourages Valmont to seduce the young girl while they are vacationing at Megève. At the same time, Valmont meets Marianne, a virtuous wife and mother who resists his advances. After seducing Cécile, Valmont follows Marianne to Paris, and there she finally succumbs to his charm, choosing him over her husband and child. Ironically, Valmont finds himself emotionally involved for the first time in his life. His wife, however, forces him to discard Marianne. The loss of both husband and lover is more than Marianne can bear, and she goes insane. The situation causes a rift between Valmont and Juliette, and their strange alliance is broken. Juliette's subsequent intrigues bring about the death of Valmont at the hands of Cécile's lover, and Juliette herself is horribly disfigured by fire as she attempts to burn her husband's incriminating letters. When she attends the inquest of Valmont's death, photographers hound her and a witness hisses.
