Synopsis

By all appearances, the beautiful and wealthy Piera Fabbri is happily married to a successful nuclear physicist, Andrea. Inwardly, however, she is filled with inexplicable anxieties that lead her to a psychoanalyst. Her parents have long been separated, and Piera tries to fill her empty existence by designing fabrics for her mother's textile mill. Even the birth of a son has failed to stabilize her, and she longs for the love denied her as a child. Left more and more alone because of her husband's preoccupation with his work, Piera drifts into a relationship with Luisa, an intelligent, refined interior decorator. Aware that Luisa has obvious lesbian tendencies, Piera persuades herself that at long last she has found the love she needs; but this relationship, too, ends in failure. She and her husband separate, and, following a violent quarrel with Luisa, she hysterically drives her car at breakneck speed into a truck and dies.
