Synopsis

Thomas Glahn, a young Swedish lieutenant, comes to a desolate island off the coast of Lapland for the summer to escape from modern society. He rents a hunting lodge from Merchant Mack, whose daughter Edvarda finds the newcomer attractive. Her distrust of men leads her to rebuff his initial advances, however. Later, Glahn introduces her to the physical pleasures of love and her fears are abated. Meanwhile, Edvarda becomes jealous of her father's mistress, Eva, whose sensuality has attracted the young Swede. Mack soon begins to notice that both Edvarda and Eva are less tolerant of his brutality; in retaliation, he reintroduces a Finnish baron, previously unsuccessful in pursuing Edvarda, and also tells her that Glahn and Eva are having an affair. Edvarda refuses to believe him and rebuffs the baron as well. At a ball honoring the baron near the end of the summer, Edvarda finds Glahn and Eva embracing in a back room; she breaks up the party and announces that she will marry the baron. Mack goes after Eva and tries to seduce her in the forest, but she flees and runs up the mountainside. When Glahn fires a volley of shots as a signal to Edvarda, an avalanche of rocks kills Eva. In a vengeful rage, Mack then sets fire to the hunting lodge and watches as it burns to the ground. Before leaving the island, Glahn pays a farewell visit to Edvarda in an attempt at reconciliation, but Edvarda's pride will not allow her to accept him.
