Synopsis
Bandit Johnny Douglas, who earns his nickname "The White Outlaw" from the white silk scarf he wears during raids, shares a hideout outside Grant Pass with his nefarious partner, Jed Isbell. Johnny refuses to rob the government, but one day discovers that Jed has held up the Wells Fargo stage while wearing a white scarf. Furious that he will be blamed, Johnny beats up Jed and declares he is finished with crime. While gathering the stolen goods, Johnny finds a letter from his hometown reverend stating that his mother is dying. Just then, Sheriff Ralston and his deputy, Bud Mason, attack the hideout, and although Johnny eludes the lawmen easily, Jed is captured. He lies that Johnny robbed the Wells Fargo stage, prompting the sheriff to offer Jed leniency in return for leading them to Johnny's mother's cabin. There, Johnny is almost trapped but once again manages to escape. Six months later, Johnny is working under an assumed name for Texas rancher Colonel Holbrook, whose foreman, Ted Williams, is in love with Holbrook's daughter Janice. On her eighteenth birthday, Janice overhears casino owner Chet Wagner threaten her father, who owes him thousands, with foreclosure unless the colonel promises himJanice's hand in marriage. Janice's younger sister Mary overhears a despondent Janice agree to meet Wagner in town, and informs Ted. Along with Johnny, they go to town, where they find Janice resisting Wagner's attempt to kiss her. Ted attacks, and although Johnny has seen a reward poster for The White Outlaw and wants to remain inconspicuous, he helps his friend knocks out Wagner. Later, when the Wells Fargo stage is held up, Johnny correctly guesses that Ted has robbed it in order to pay Holbrook's debts. Because Ted has worn Johnny's white silk scarf, the sheriff now assumes that Ted is The White Outlaw. Ted is arrested, after which Johnny tells him his real identity. With Ted's information, Johnny retrieves the stolen loot, then dons the white scarf and robs Wagner's safe in order to seize Holbrook's IOU note. Having established that Ted cannot be The White Outlaw, Johnny flees town, followed by the sheriff's posse, which now includes Ted. Unknown to Johnny, Jed is in town searching for him in the hopes of earning the reward for The White Outlaw. Jed attacks Johnny on the trail, but Johnny overcomes him, and Jed falls over a cliff to his death. By the time the posse arrives, Johnny has traded clothes with Jed and identifies him as The White Outlaw. When Ted, who is the only person who knows the truth, sees Johnny surreptitiously tear up the colonel's debt note, he keeps quiet. Later, Johnny decides to move on, but promises the Holbrooks that he will return when he has "made good."
