Synopsis
Jim Manning, recently retired from the Secret Service, buys a trunk at a police auction of stolen and unclaimed goods. That night his house is broken into by Fawcett and Turner, two crooks, and by Margaret Hampton; the men escape, but she takes him into her confidence by explaining that her father, John Hampton, had been a trusted employee of Olaff Stevanov, a jewel merchant; although guiltless, Hampton is accused of absconding with a valuable necklace and has been given a prison sentence. Manning shares her suspicions of Fawcett and Turner, who return to steal the trunk but are unable to find the jewels inside. Manning, by swift action and cunning, catches them as well as Stevanov, their master, and produces the pearls, which he had removed from the trunk.
