Synopsis

As gold shipments from his Mexican mine are being stolen, Don Roberto Lopez sends for Jimmy Wakely to investigate the matter. When Jimmy stops to take a drink of water on his way to the mine, he is held up at gunpoint by dangerous thief The Texas Kid, who steals his clothes along with his letter of introduction to Don Roberto. Later, The Kid arrives at the mine and, pretending to be Jimmy, announces his intention to take a load of ore from the mine that night. This makes the clerk suspicious, and when he challenges The Kid, he is shot. The gunshot rouses people on Don Roberto's nearby hacienda, and Lasses, one of his employees, wounds The Kid. Later, the men discover Jimmy's letter of introduction near the clerk's body and, except for his old friend Lasses, assume that he is the killer. When Jimmy arrives in town the following morning, he discovers that he is wanted for murder and decides to keep his identity secret. Because he is wearing The Kid's discarded outfit, however, the federales believe that he is the bandit. Lasses recognizes Jimmy and is about to reveal his real identity, when Jimmy stops him and introduces himself as Jimmy Jones. Fortunately, saloon keeper Bart Thomas, believing that Jimmy really is The Kid, confirms his assumed identity. Jimmy then joins the Thomas gang to work undercover. Later, Jimmy hears Don Roberto's niece Chinita singing at the hacienda and, determined to meet her, sings her a song. She is impressed and asks the handsome cowboy to teach her to play the guitar while she and her aunt Dolores drive the carriage into town. As they are riding along with Lasses, they see bandits chasing a hay wagon, and Chinita reveals that her uncle's payroll is hidden under the hay. Jimmy and Lasses chase away the bandits, but one of them drops a card belonging to mining engineer Francisco Valdez, with a message on the back, "midnight at Mesa Robles." Construing this to mean that the bandits plan to kidnap Valdez, Jimmy secretly races to Mesa Robles and prevents the abduction. Later, Jimmy and Lasses spot The Kid meeting with Bart. Jimmy and Lasses capture The Kid, and Lasses hides him in an old shack until Jimmy can discover the identity of the man behind Don Roberto's problems. Bart follows, however, and releases The Kid. Listening to their conversation, Lasses learns that the bandits are planning to raid the hacienda during a fiesta, because the small mine owners in the area will all be delivering gold there at that time. After Jimmy arrives at the shack, he and Lasses hurry to warn the ranchers. At the hacienda, they ask Fred Jackson, the mine superintendent, to cancel the fiesta, and when he refuses, realize that he is the man behind the robberies. After they take care of Jackson, Jimmy and Lasses send for help and then hold off the bandits until the federales arrive. With the bandits in jail, Jimmy decides to stay at the hacienda and teach Chinita to play the guitar.
