Synopsis

As an orphaned child, Sam is reared by the McCarvers on New York's Lower East Side. Later, as a contender for the heavyweight boxing championship, he is cheered by the crowds and admired by a wealthy society woman, Carlotta Asche, at the gymnasium. While escorting his aging stepmother across the street, Sam is struck by Carlotta's automobile, and at the hospital he again wins her admiration by refusing a money settlement. As a nightclub proprietor in New York's Roaring Forties, Sam tries to conceal his affection for Carlotta, and she does likewise because of her aristocratic training. During the New Year festivities, Georgie McCarver, drunk, is repulsed by Carlotta; and Sam refuses to honor any more checks from Monty, Carlotta's friend. When she is implicated in Monty's shooting, Sam takes the blame; and when the death is found to be suicide, Sam and Carlotta acknowledge their mutual love.
