Synopsis

When her father, a member of a band of strolling English players, dies, Fanny O'Gorman is sent by the band's manager to Bantock Hall, where her relatives are servants. Her liveliness and carefree manner are not tolerated by her Uncle Bennett, the butler, whose restraints lead her to escape to London, where she becomes a success as a musical star. She falls in love with Vernon, an artist, and discovers after they marry that he is Lord Bantock, and she is the niece, cousin, and aunt to their twenty-three servants. Fanny gets her relatives to keep her secret as Bennett, a strict upholder of tradition, tries unsuccessfully to curb her spirit and teach her the etiquette required of Lady Bantock. When she can stand it no longer, Fanny reveals her identity to Vernon, who is not displeased. Her Uncle Bennett finally softens and admits that the first Lady Bantock was the daughter of a butcher.
