Synopsis
Matthew Gordon, an absent-minded, moderately wealthy bookworm, loves his two daughters, Peggy, who bubbles over with energy, and Frances, older and more refined, whose interests include pink teas and fancy clothes. After Frances' fiancé, lawyer Stanley Davis, induces Gordon to invest nearly all his money in a labor-saving invention, the contract is misplaced. When the invention becomes successful, the inventor denies acknowledging Gordon's investment. The Gordons are forced to rent their house to the wealthy Mortons and move over the garden wall to their modest gardener's cottage. Peter Morton, whom Peggy has mistaken for a chauffeur, and Peggy, who now sells vegetables from her garden, fall in love. When Frances breaks her engagement to Stanley and pawns her father's valuable books to buy herself an expensive riding habit with which to entice Eric Fairchild, a wealthy young architect, Peter buys the books. Peggy, learning Peter's identity, denounces him. After Peggy tries to stop Frances' elopement, Peter saves Peggy from being compromised. She finds the contract in one of her father's books, and is reconciled with Peter.
