Synopsis

Saddlepals Jimmy, Denny and Lasses are riding the trail when they see Dale Harding race past them on a runaway horse. After the three ride to her rescue, Dale snaps at them because she was only pretending to have lost control of her horse to lure her riding companion, Bruce Carter, to Lookout Point. Grateful for their intervention, Carter invites the men for a drink at the Mesa Inn, where he and Dale are vacationing. After Carter and Dale ride away, Denny and Jimmy find her wallet on the ground and go to the inn to return it. Meanwhile, in the hotel's lobby, Carter meets John Winters, who hands him a letter of introduction to Thomas Manning and tells him to leave the hotel immediately. Cleve Trevor eavesdrops on their conversation and then goes to Dale's room. There, as Dale tells Cleve about her failure to lure Carter to Lookout Point, Carter arrives to say goodbye. Cleve pulls out his gun, demands Carter's letter of introduction and then shoots him. Outside the inn, Denny hears the sound of gunfire, bursts into Dale's room, fires his pistol and wounds Cleve, who then flees the hotel. Drawn by the sound of gunshots, the hotel manager hurries to the room, and Dale accuses Denny of murdering Carter. When Jimmy sees Cleve galloping off and learns that Denny has been accused of murder, he rides back to the camp and tells Lasses to go to the hotel and pose as the sheriff. After Lasses takes Denny into custody, the real sheriff arrives at the hotel and then rides in pursuit of Denny and Lasses. Back at the camp, Denny hides in the wagon, and by the time the sheriff arrives, Lasses and the cowhands are serenely engaged in song. Lasses sends the sheriff to Mesa Junction on a wild goose chase, then he and Denny follow Cleve's trail while Jimmy returns to the inn to watch Dale. Lasses and Denny trail Cleve to an abandoned shack where he collapses from his wound. Before dying, Cleve shows them his federal agent's badge and Carter's letter of introduction and asks them to tell Dale that their objective is the Ajax Mine. Soon after Cleve expires, the sheriff and his posse arrive at the shack, and Jimmy, flashing the federal agent's badge, identifies Cleve as Carter's killer. Meanwhile, at the inn, Dale, who is aware that Jimmy is watching her, sneaks away but is followed to her campsite by Jimmy. When Jimmy refuses to leave her until she explains why she accused Denny of murder, the two ride to the town of Cal-Nevada together. In town, Johnny, one of the cowhands, informs Jimmy that Denny has been killed. Remorseful, Dale then confides that she and Cleve are government agents who have been assigned to collect evidence against Carter and his gang. Just then, Denny and Lasses walk out of the hotel and Denny tells Dale that Cleve is dead. After learning Dale's mission, Denny realizes that the gang must be headquartered at the Ajax Mine and offers to pose as Carter and infiltrate the outlaws. Confiding her suspicions the gang is secreting stolen gold bullion in the mine, Dale asks Denny to ascertain how the gold is being transported across the state line. While Lasses and Jimmy wait in the hills surrounding the mine, Denny approaches the deserted-looking shack. Once inside, he meets Manning and his gang and presents Carter's letter of introduction. Manning then escorts Denny into the mine shaft to show him the passages they have tunneled across the state line. Growing impatient, Jimmy and Lasses ride down to the shack and are captured by the gang. Upon climbing out of the tunnels, Manning learns about their intruders and orders their execution. Denny tricks his way into the room in which Jimmy and Lasses are being held, overpowers their guard and frees them. Leading them into the mine, Denny tells them to explore the tunnels and then return to town to investigate someone called "Mac" who is involved in shipping the stolen gold. Upon returning to the shack, Denny is confronted by the newly arrived Winters, who exposes him as a government agent and instructs the gang to tie him up. As Winters orders the gold loaded onto wagons that night, Lasses and Jimmy creep along the tunnels and surface at the MacDonald Food and Grain Company. The next morning, as Lasses and Jimmy meet Dale outside the feed store, Winters orders the bound Denny into the gold-laden wagons and sends them on their way. When Lasses notices that all the hay inside the feed store is missing, he sends Dale for the sheriff while he and Jimmy ride to the mine. Finding the shack abandoned, Jimmy and Lasses follow the wagon tracks. Meanwhile, Denny frees his bonds, overpowers his captors and seizes control of the wagon reins. Lasses and Jimmy then overtake and apprehend Manning and Winters just as Dale arrives with the sheriff. With the gang captured, Dale closes her case, and Jimmy, Denny and Lasses say goodbye and hit the trail.
