Synopsis

Hallie, a shill in a cheap street carnival, falls in love with Butch, a grifter and three-shell artist who works with her. Hallie is arrested for gambling and, when she vows in court to reform, is paroled into the custody of Isaiah, an evangelist whose tent is pitched across the street from the carnival. Hallie quickly comes to respect the kindly old man and uses her carnival skills to make his revival meetings a success. Butch buys a carnival of his own and, seeing the tabernacle as his biggest rival, sets out with his men to put it out of business. Encountering Hallie again, his anger is turned aside, however, and he and his men help her to shill for Isaiah. A rival carnival burns out Butch, and Hallie, convincing Butch that it is for the best, makes plans for a brighter tomorrow with him.
