Synopsis

After bank cashier Paul Ferguson proposes to Alice McCloud, the ward of his employer, John Hardesty, Hardesty discovers that Ferguson is short in his accounts. Because Alice has accepted the proposal, Hardesty lets Ferguson leave town with Alice to avoid prosecution. Two years later, Ferguson is the town drunk in a Western mining camp. Alice dies after giving birth to a girl, who becomes a spirited tomboy known as Rags. Although her father abuses her, Rags protects him during a barroom brawl. Keith Duncan, a wealthy young mining engineer, who is Hardesty's nephew, arrives and falls in love with Rags, who, although she discovers she loves Keith, realizes that they cannot marry because of their different social positions. When Rags learns that Ferguson and two others plan to rob Keith of his payroll, she alerts the sheriff. Mortally wounded in the ensuing battle, Ferguson writes to Hardesty to take care of Rags. In Hardesty's palatial home, Rags learns to live with wealth and dress in fashion. Later, Hardesty, wanting Keith to marry Rags, sends for him. After a misunderstanding, their love is renewed.
