Synopsis

Sonia Varinoff, a Russian peasant girl, Peter Derwynt, a Southern architect, Lady Jeane Tremelyn, a member of the British aristocracy, and Jimmie Sutherland, an uncultivated parvenu, are all thrown together by chance in New York City. Derwynt and Lady Jeane, both with high ideals and cultivated tastes, are mutually attracted, but Sonia throws herself at Derwynt, offending Lady Jeane so greatly that she marries Sutherland, thus allowing Sonia to catch Derwynt on the rebound. After discovering that her husband's income cannot support her spendthrift ways, Sonia accepts Sutherland's offer to dance in his cabaret, and be billed as the "masked dancer." Upon uncovering his wife's exhibitionism, Derwynt angrily confronts Sutherland, and in the ensuing fight Derwynt shoots his wife's lover. To save her husband's life, Sonia testifies that the shooting was justified by her misconduct. Derwynt is acquitted and marries Lady Jeane while Sonia marries Van Vechtan, an old friend of her husband.
