Synopsis

Mike Farrell, the son of a Spanish don, comes home from his army service in Siberia to discover that his father is dead and his ranch, Palomar, is in the hands of John Parker. While Parker is maneuvering to turn Palomar over to Okada, a Japanese potato baron who desires the land for a colonization scheme, Mike falls in love with Kay Parker. After Mike is attacked and seriously wounded by Okada, Kay nurses him to health and their love grows. By a clever ruse and with a good horse, Mike regains the ranch.

Notes

The novel was originally serialized in Cosmopolitan magazine. According to publicity for the film, Rancho Guajome, where the story is set, was leased for shooting by Cosmopolitan. The rancho had formerly been part of the San Luis Rey Mission, founded by Fra Junipero Serra in 1769. Helen Hunt Jackson had lived there and gathered information for her novel Ramona.
