Synopsis

Upon her father's death, Mildred Gower is forced into a marriage with wealthy old roué General Siddall. Due to the general's selfishness, the marriage is a failure and Mildred leaves her husband in Paris. Returning to America on the steamer, she meets Stanley Baird, a former suitor who offers to finance her study of music as a business proposition. Mildred is to repay Baird when she procures an engagement to sing on the concert stage. With Baird's money, Mildred lives a life of luxury, neglecting her work until Donald Keith, a friend of Baird's, accuses her of being a kept woman. Mildred then begins to work in earnest, living with an Italian maestro's family and studying seriously. She finally obtains an engagement when Siddall returns to claim her as his wife. Mildred is freed from her marriage, however, when Keith learns that Siddall is already married. Mildred then repays Baird and, now an independent woman, marries Keith.
