Synopsis
In the little Southern town of Vixville, a poor clerk, Andrew Jackson Cavanaugh, vies with Jimmy Long, who is fat but owns a car, for the love of Phyllis Laurin. At a dance, Andrew persuades Phyllis to consider herself engaged to him. On the streetcar on the way home that night, a masked bandit robs all the young men. The next day Andrew goes into debt buying a ring on the installment plan and a new suit. Though his uncle forbids him to go out, Andrew wants to attend a big party, and so resorts to crawling out on the roof, where he discovers and captures the bandit. Phyllis' grandfather, Judge Laurin, eulogizes Andrew, assuring him of a reward. Andrew, discovering that Jimmy has paid off the jeweler for the ring meant for Phyllis, takes back the ring from Jimmy, ties him up in his car and returns triumphant to Phyllis.
