Synopsis
When John Logan, Jr., the son of a Kentucky farmer, decides to go to New York to get rich, his sweetheart, Jennie Timberlake dons her fanciest clothes to persuade him not to go. Although his mother's minister, in a public ceremony, prevails upon John to stay, he later goes, promising to return in one year. While Jennie marks off each night on a slate, John gets work with a toy manufacturer, who offers $10,000 if he can invent a toy frog that swims. Seven years later, John succeeds and returning home unrecognized, rents a room in the Logan home. John's father, indebted and about to lose his farm, sees John flash his bankroll and decides to rob him. After a struggle in which Logan thinks that he killed his victim, Mrs. Logan discovers that John is their boarder. John then enters, and it is revealed that the man attacked, who recovers, is a bank robber hiding out. John saves the farm and marries Jennie.

The character played by Bertram Grassby is given variously as "Judas" and "the city man;" that played by Porter Strong as "the Negro farmhand," "the Negro servant" and "the funny waiter;" that played by Adolphe Lestina as "Vinegar Watkins" and "Jim Darkly;" and that played by Lydia Yeamans Titus as "Old Lady Smiles" and "Auntie Smiles." Captain Victor Marier was one of D. W. Griffith's pseudonyms. According to modern sources, the film editor was James Smith, and Carol Dempster, in her film debut, played a girl whom John Logan, Jr., meets in New York.
