Synopsis
After years of experimentation, Martin Abbott, a country chemist, discovers a compound that makes him a fortune. Eager to change lifestyles, Sarah Abbott persuades her husband to move the family to the city. As soon as they arrive, the Abbotts become the prey of society con artists whose operations are overseen by Sarah's new secretary. Although she loves Davey, her country sweetheart, Polly Abbott, Sarah's pretty daughter, is introduced to an aristocratic bachelor, in reality, one of the secretary's cohorts. Pressured by the swindlers to invest his money in a phony company, Martin soon finds himself penniless once more. As a final deception, the gangsters persuade Martin to sell his farm land, but before he signs the papers, Davey, who has discovered that the land is a valuable coal bed, stops the transaction. Finally beaten, the crooks confess their crimes, and a humbled Sarah agrees to return to the country where Davey, his devotion appreciated, marries Polly.
