Synopsis

After a three-year hunt, Canadian mounted police officer Derwent Conniston captures his prey, John Keith, the accused murderer of Judge Kirkstone. Before they can return to the post, Conniston becomes ill and is nursed by his prisoner who confides in the Mountie the story of his justified assault on Kirkstone when the judge threatened Keith's father. The Mountie believes him and, knowing that death is near, suggests that Keith, who bears a remarkable resemblance to his captor, assume his identity. Keith does so and, upon returning to the post, announces his prisoner's death. The deception convinces everyone but Shan Tung, who remains silent because he knows the identity of the true murderer, Kirkstone's son Peter. Shan Tung is in love with Peter's sister Miriam and, under threat of exposing her brother, forces the girl to consent to marry him. Meanwhile, Conniston's younger sister Mary Josephine arrives at the post, and Keith falls in love with her. When Miriam tells Keith about the power that Shan Tung holds over her, he confronts the Chinese, and in the ensuing struggle, the blackmailer is killed. Keith, no longer able to contain his love for Mary Josephine, tells her the truth and then departs for Saskatchewan. After his departure, she learns the whole story from Peter and, realizing that she loves the man she thought was her brother, follows him until the two share a joyous reunion.

Notes

The novel first appeared in Good Housekeeping. This was Marshall Neilan's initial production to be released by First National. The film was also called River's End. Some scenes were shot at Bear Valley, CA. Director Victor Heerman supervised the making of inserts and titles, and directed various scenes under Neilan's supervision. Warner Bros. Pictures produced River's End, based on the same source in 1930; Michael Curtiz directed, and Charles Bickford and Evelyn Knapp starred (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1921-30; F2.4638).
