Synopsis

In Spain, Andres and his friend Ramon both love Maria Rosa. Then, when she chooses Andres, Ramon kills a fisherman, and has Andres thrown in jail for the murder, after which, instead of accepting Ramon's marriage proposal, Maria vows to wait for her sweetheart. Undeterred, Ramon then presents Maria Rosa with a forged letter, supposedly from the prison, reporting Andres' death. Maria Rosa believes the news, and finally consents to marry Ramon, but on the wedding day, Andres is pardoned and comes to Maria Rosa. The sight of her "dead" lover makes her suddenly aware of Ramon's unscrupulousness, and so, finding an opportunity to be alone with her fiancé, she stabs him. Then, when the wedding guests rush to his aid, a repentant Ramon, just before dying, claims that his wound was an accidental, self-inflicted one, thereby allowing Andres and Maria Rosa to begin making plans for their marriage.

Notes

The play was translated from the Catalan by José Echegaray y Eizaguirre. An English language version of the play, by Guido Marburg and Wallace Gillpatrick, had its premiere in New York on January 19, 1914. This was the first film in which Geraldine Farrar acted, although Carmen was released earlier. According to a modern source, Wilfred Buckland was the art director on this film.
