Synopsis
Alice Darvil, an innocent and simple girl of 16, lives with her harsh father in a sequestered country cottage. Walter Butler, an author, is caught in a storm while on a walking tour and seeks shelter for the night in the Darvil home. He is attracted to Alice, and, when he meets her later in a neighboring village (after she has been thrown out of her house), he takes her to live with him. He soon marries her, but, when he is forced to leave for a business trip, she runs away. A child, Mary Jane, is born to her, and she becomes a domestic in the house of Mrs. Leslie, a charitable woman of wealth. There she meets Colonel Anderson, a wealthy old man whom she also marries. Alice and the colonel drift apart and, when he dies, he leaves his considerable fortune to Mary Jane. Walter Butler, who has become a recluse, writing books of spiritual consolation under the name of Malvern, tires of the solitary life and decides to open his home to visitors. Mary Jane, not knowing that he is her father, comes to visit Butler's home, and Butler falls in love with her. They are about to be married, when Butler discovers that Mary Jane is his daughter. Butler is then reconciled with Alice, and Mary Jane marries her young sweetheart.
