Synopsis

Raised in drudgery, young Bertha Gilman accepts the marriage proposal of elderly Marshall Haney, provided that he sell his saloon, give up gambling and live on the handsome income derived from his mines. Before they are married, a miner who has lost his money in the gambling hall shoots Haney, and Bertha nurses him back to health, although he remains badly crippled. They move to Colorado where Bertha meets Ben Fordyce and his fiancée Alice Heath, a consumptive. The four travel East on the same train and a strong attraction develops between Ben and Bertha, although both valiantly struggle to remain faithful to their mates. In the East, Bertha's longing for Ben becomes unbearable and her husband, noting her morose condition and being apprised of the cause of it by Alice just before she dies, suggests to his wife that they return home to Colorado. To bring happiness to Bertha, Haney, who has a weak heart, deliberately climbs a mountain. As he reaches the top he dies, and Ben and Bertha realize the supreme sacrifice which he has made for them.
