Synopsis

Artist Brian McCree adopts Perpetua, a 12-year-old orphan, and takes her to France, where for several years they lead a carefree life as members of a circus. Following her education in a convent, Russell Felton, a British swindler, recognizes Perpetua as the daughter of his abandoned wife; he introduces his friend Mender, a habitual drunkard who has willed him his fortune, and induces Brian to paint Mender's portrait. Although Perpetua loves Brian, Felton reveals her parentage and brings about her marriage to Mender. When the latter is poisoned, Perpetua is suspected of murder, having acquired the legal rights to his money. She is found guilty but later is exonerated by Felton's confession. Felton is killed by Christian, a former accomplice and ex-convict, and Perpetua admits her love for Brian.
