Synopsis

While returning from France, Barbara Brown, the madcap daughter of an American millionaire, receives news that her father has died in New York and that she is penniless. Disillusioned and broke in San Francisco, she accepts a last-minute invitation to a New Year's Eve party where she avoids the direct attentions of Hardiman, a roué, by disguising herself as a boy. She is picked up by a gang of hoboes and accepted by them, although their leader, Bravo, sees through her disguise. When her life is endangered by a brakeman's cunning, she and Bravo leave their pals Shorty and Dinky and stay at a smalltown hotel. Bravo buys Barbara some feminine attire, indicating both his awareness of her pretense and his romantic interest, and she consequently suspects him of a robbery; but it is explained that he is actually an author hoboing to grasp local color. They decide to tramp through life together.
