Synopsis

Disowned by his railroad president father for leading a dissolute life, Jack Oakes resolves to turn over a new leaf and takes a job in the railroad yards. He does well and is promoted to engineer while falling in love with Mary Travers, the daughter of the engineer of the Midnight Express. When Jack accidentally causes the death of a friend, he requests transfer to a small station in the mountains. Escaped convict Silent Bill Brachely shows up one night to repay Jack for sending him to prison, and a fight ensues during which Jack realizes that a runaway freight train is heading for collision with the Midnight Express. Jack knocks out Bill just in time to derail the freight train, thus redeeming himself in the eyes of Mary and his father.
