Synopsis

When Arnold Grahme, a celebrated organist, returns from an extended trip to Europe, he finds that Madelaine, with whom he is in love, has been forced by her family to marry the rich Count Zara, who treats her brutally, beating her with a riding crop and openly conducting an affair with his cousin, Pauline Zara. The count arranges with Pauline for the removal of Madelaine's child, Joan, who is taken to England and falsely reported dead of diphtheria. Arnold kills the count in a duel in Italy. Madelaine enters a convent to nurse her sorrow and a weak heart. Arnold finds her among the gentle sisters and asks her to marry him. After a long period of refusal, she consents--but dies moments later of a heart attack. After many years, Grahme meets Madelaine's daughter, who has become a musical comedy star; not knowing who she is, he proposes and they are about to be wed when he discovers that she is deeply in love with his nephew, Jack. Grahme gives her up, sacrificing his own happiness for that of the young people, and finding solace in his music.
