Synopsis

When the head of an aristocratic, but impoverished, Virginia family must be treated for his illness by a New York specialist, his daughter, Claudia Daingerfield, raises money by leasing their old Southern mansion to Burton Crane. The only condition Crane makes is that the black servants be replaced by white servants. Claudia and her brothers and sister take on the roles of servants, with calamitous results. When Claudia is introduced to Burton as his cook, he immediately falls in love with her. Claudia overcomes her lack of culinary skills by smuggling Mammy Jackson into the house to do the cooking. The other "servants" are all let go, and the father survives the dangerous operation. When Claudia's true identity is revealed, Burton recognizes her pluck, and she accepts his offer of marriage.

Notes

A. E. Thomas wrote a stage play based on the Duer novel, also titled Come Out of the Kitchen, which had its premiere in New York on October 23, 1916. Some scenes for this film were shot in Pass Christian, MS. One source lists the actor who plays Mrs. Faulkner as Mrs. August Anderson. Among the remakes of this film are a 1930 Paramount film called Honey (see below), and two British films called Come Out of the Pantry (1935) and Spring in Park Lane (1948). The 1935 film was directed by Jack Raymond and starred Jack Buchanan and Fay Wray, the 1948 was directed by Herbert Wilcox and starred Anna Neagle and Michael Wilding.
