Synopsis

In a saloon in Taos, Kit Carson gets into a fight with Shuman over a Spanish dancer who has taken Kit's fancy. The following day, both men, who are part of a government peace-keeping mission ordered into the troubled Blackfeet country, ride north. On the way, Kit encounters Sings-in-the-Clouds, the daughter of the Blackfeet chief, rescuing her from an attacking bear. This single brave act establishes peaceful relations between the whites and the Indians. These relations are almost broken, however, when Shuman attacks the Indian girl with a knife; Kit shoots him in the hand and sends him packing. Shuman later attacks the girl in the desert and causes her death. Kit goes after him and throws him from a cliff into the Blackfeet circle of death. With peace established, Kit returns to Taos.
