Synopsis

Karl Van Kerstenbroock, a famous Flemish soldier of fortune, trails Basil Dormer to England, where, to avenge his sister's death, he challenges and kills him. Royalist Watt Musgrove, hearing of his friend's death, challenges Van Kerstenbroock to a duel. To save his life, Watt's sister, Thomsine, who is betrothed to Viscount Carisford, disguises herself as a boy and pleads with Van Kerstenbroock to cancel the duel. When Watt fails to appear, Van Kerstenbroock escapes arrest by Royalist guards and falls into the hands of Cromwell, whose forces he joins, leading them against Charles II. Acting as a spy, Van Kerstenbroock visits Staversham, the home of the father of Thomsine's fiancé. Thomsine hides Van Kerstenbroock in her room when his life is in danger. After she helps him escape, he leads a battalion to dethrone the king, then rescues Thomsine.
