Synopsis

When James Armstrong, an unfaithful former suitor, sends her embarrassing letters, Louise Newbold accompanies her husband William on a prospecting trip to avoid a confrontation. When her horse plunges down an embankment, Louise is severely injured and pleads with Newbold to kill her. After Newbold reluctantly complies, he flees to the mountains taking only Louise's locket, which contains a picture of Armstrong, and becomes a recluse. Five years later, Enid Maitland travels West to visit her Uncle Robert, a wealthy miner. Armstrong meets and falls in love with her. On a camping trip with Robert and Armstrong, Enid wanders off to swim. Newbold kills a bear sniffing her clothes, and after a blizzard strikes, they become snowbound in his cabin. Enid and Newbold grow to love each other during the long winter, although the love remains platonic. When the rescue party finds the cabin, Newbold recognizes Armstrong from the photograph in the locket and fights him. After Armstrong leaves and commits suicide, Enid and Newbold marry.
