Synopsis

When their father dies, Joan and Olive, daughters of the Reverend Farrant, are left in poverty as a result of being swindled by Londoner Leonard Pearce, who has courted Joan. Olive becomes a nurse but loses her position, and Joan agrees to marry Pearce provided that he take Olive into his home. Olive learns of Pearce's swindle, and Joan leaves him and goes to London, where she becomes secretary to Sir Henry Bond, a book collector, who falls in love with her and proposes. She refuses at first, but hearing that Pearce has died she accepts Sir Henry's offer; Pearce returns quite alive, however, and finding her married, he drops dead in a fit of rage.
