Synopsis
Two cousins are raised in different environments: Ruth Stevens is raised by a watchful, loving mother who tells her about life, while Lillian Stevens is raised by Minna, an insensitive mother who would rather gamble than attend to her child. When the girls are grown, Lillian meets Harold Winthrop, the reckless scion of a wealthy widow, and soon becomes pregnant with his child. A short time later, however, Harold meets Ruth and immediately falls in love with her, thus ignoring Lillian. Because Minna has become involved with an abortionist, she takes her daughter to him, but Lillian becomes mortally ill after the operation. On her deathbed, Lillian begs for forgiveness for her mother and confesses that Harold was the father of her child. After Lillian's death, Richard, Minna's husband, sends her away just as Ruth breaks her engagement to Harold.
