Synopsis

While their father, Michael Kalmar, remains in a Siberian prison, political refugees Ivan and Irma Kalmar seek freedom in Canada (Winnipeg). But they again encounter persecution--from their father's enemy, Makaroff--and the prejudice of some of their neighbors. Ivan's violin playing attracts the interest of Marjorie Menzies and--with it--the enmity of District Attorney Mortimer Staunton, who insults Ivan as a "foreigner." When Irma is insulted at a party, her abuser is slain, and Ivan is arrested. Michael, who has escaped from prison and just arrived, confesses to the murder and is jailed. Ivan becomes a foreman in the coal mine that Makaroff is trying to acquire. The villain fails and attempts to destroy the mine and its employees with an explosion, in which he dies. The confession of a long-time servant of the Kalmars frees Michael, and Ivan wins Marjorie.
