Synopsis

Gideon Gory, scion of a wealthy mill family of the West, meets Mary Hubbel on his return home from Europe with his mother, and romance begins to flower. But Mrs. Gory, now widowed, persuades him to return to Europe after selling the mill, and Gideon promises Mary that he will come back soon. In Paris, Gid joins the Lafayette Escadrille at the outbreak of the World War; while on leave, he discovers that his mother is being swindled by a Dr. Blagden and that she consorts with "professional dancers." When he is wounded at the front, Mary, who is a nurse, fails to recognize him; and his face is refashioned by plastic surgery. In Paris he finds his mother poverty-stricken and dying; eventually, he becomes a successful gigolo or paid dancing partner in Nice and recognizes Mary, whose family has become wealthy, but he does not identify himself until he assaults Blagden. Gid returns home, takes a job at the mill, and at last finds happiness with Mary.
