Synopsis

During the World War, John Lothbury joins the French Air Force as a pilot and is later reported dead by the French Government. John's brother, who has embezzled $10,000 from Wallace Straker, blames the theft on John, and John's widow, Margaret, marries Straker in order to avoid a posthumous scandal involving John. With Margaret still secretly mourning him, John escapes from a German prison camp and returns to the United States. Going back to his small hometown, he discovers that his wife has remarried. He calls on her, introducing himself as a friend of her late husband. Margaret does not recognize him, for his face was blown off in the war and plastic surgery has given him a completely changed appearance. John eventually works himself into the presidency of an aircraft company that is a rival to Straker's firm, and, when Straker finds himself in financial difficulties, John helps him out in order to protect Margaret. Straker finds out John's true identity and, in a state of rage and drunkeness, gets a gun and goes after him. He is about to shoot, when a life of dissipation takes its toll and he dies of a heart attack. John and Margaret are reunited, and John is cleared of all guilt in the theft of Straker's money.
