Paul Grimault and Jacques Prévert began collaborating on the hand-drawn project in 1948 and Grimault's partner André Sarrut took control, releasing a truncated version in 1952. Grimault spent 15 years regaining the rights and 10 years more to get financing to complete the project. Grimault and Prévert finished the film in 1980.
