Synopsis
Fictionalized vignettes which examine the 1992 Los Angeles riots from four distinct ethnic perspectives: Asian, Latino, white and black. "Gold Mountain" attempts to delineate the familiar generational split between Old World Chinese parents and their New World son while the family liquor store is being looted. The second segment, "Caught in the Fever," traces how a young Latino couple goes over the line into joining lawless hysteria despite their knowing better. "Empty" focuses on a clean-cut white L.A. cop who begins his day asking "What happened to the country?.. How did we go from Martin Luther King to Rodney King?" but is forced to make crucial decisions when he is caught in the middle of the riots. And the final segment, "Homecoming Day," tries to relate a multiplicity of black generational perspectives about the negative aspects of living in South Central.
