Synopsis

Prosecutor Helen West and her live-in lover, Geoffrey Bailey, have recently moved to a sedate London suburb where he is chief superintendent. When the badly decomposed corpse of a woman turns up in a shallow grave, the victim's husband, smooth real-estate developer John Blundell, is an obvious suspect. But the Blundell's daughter Evie discloses that her mother was having an affair with Anthony Sumner, Evie's English teacher. Things look bad for Sumner when his cigarettes and cane show up at the crime scene. Geoffrey thinks the case is closed, but Helen rekindles his doubts and together they delve deeper into the mystery. The key figure seems to be William Featherstone, a disturbed young man with a propensity for inept thievery and bungled arson.
