Synopsis
Set in a corrupt and brawling Vienna, Shakespeare's dark comedy tells the story of a peculiar attempt at moral reform undertaken by Duke Vincentio, the city's ruler. Pretending to leave Vienna, he appoints a deputy, Angelo, to rule in his place. Once in power, Angelo becomes a stern ruler, enforcing a law prohibiting pre-marital sex, sentencing a young man named Claudio to death for breaking that law. Yet when Angelo meets Claudio's lover Isabella, he falls in love with her himself and tries to blackmail her, demanding sexual favors from her in exchange for Claudio's life.
